Alexandria "The Pearl of the Mediterranean". Alexandria is the second largest city is Egypt. Located in northern Egypt on the Delta of the River Nile. Lying where the river meets the Mediterranean Sea. Visited by people from the world over, to enjoy the stunning beaches and Mediterranean climate. Many Egyptians flock here from Cairo to escape the extreme heat! A holiday to Alexandria feels more like a holiday to the Med... Rather than the Middle East. The main charms of this fabulous city are that it boasts relics from both the ancient Egyptian and the ancient Roman times. Making it one of the most dynamic cities in Egypt, as well as having a lot on offer!
On a holiday to Alexandria, the best places to visit are the Citadel, situated on the site of the Lighthouse of Alexandria. The lighthouse was labelled one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Completed in 3BC it was probably one of the tallest buildings around. The largest Roman cemetery in Alexandria – Fort Qaitby is a must visit, the World War 2 cemeteries are also very interesting. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Montazah Palace are also definietlely worth a good look!
Pompey´s pillar is located in Alexandria, it is the most well known ancient monuments that still stand today! Originally built in 283 in the memory of the rebel Domitius Domitianus. Downtown Alexandria is probably the liveliest place, lined streets of antique shops, boutiques, restaurants and cafes. The seafood available is amazing. Budget hotels are available here as well as the luxury! Make sure you visit the tomb of the Unknown Soldier whilst you´re in the district. Nights out are generally quieter than those in Cairo, but with a much more local feel you can really discover the true colours of Egypt.
