Thomas cook, the longest running holiday company in the world and probably the best well known. This long established company began in 1841 by a far flung idea from Thomas Cook. He created the successful trip of about 500 passengers travelling between Leicester and Loughborough. With the trip a triumph and at great value for money Thomas Cook spent the next three summers making other rail journeys possible around the Midlands. He then organised a trip to Liverpool and issued with the tickets a handbook – much like the modern day holiday brochure. Along with the issue of tickets and the first form of travellers cheques! Thomas Cook later helped in the construction of the infamous Crystal Palace by organising workers from the Midlands and Yorkshire to be brought to London. Topping numbers of 150,000 people being brought to London for the exhibition.
Thomas Cook later broke to Europe and North America, whilst his son took care of the business from home – being more of a business man John Mason Cook ran head office. After the death of both Thomas and John in the 1980s the company went to Thomas Cooks´ grandsons. They then sold the business to a Belgium company, however after the war the rights were brought back to Britain and over time it grew to offer long–haul holidays and winter sport holidays and become the well known company we know today!
Now the second largest travel group in the UK, after that of TUI (First Choice and Thomson). In July 2007 Thomas Cook merged with My Travel to form Thomas Cook PLC. Offering holidays under the names of some of the most popular tour operators like Airtours, Manos, Club 18–30, Neilson, Panorama, Sunset and the chic Thomas Cook Signature, to name a few. All on package based holidays using the companies very own airline – Thomas Cook Airways which is the former JMC and MyTravel Fleet.
