The ancient city of Fez is without doubt the centre of culture and spirituality in Morocco. Mosques, medersas (Islamic schools), fondouks (medieval warehouses with accommodation) and monuments are everywhere. Steeped in French history, the sights, sounds, and smells of the ancient city of Fez are unforgettable. Within the city walls the narrow winding streets play host to a maze of beautiful old buildings, souks, little cafes, and craftsmen at work.
Fez attractions are numerous, and when you’ve finally run out of mosques and fondouks, there are gardens and tombs and bustling outdoor markets to stroll around. From the Merenid Tombs on the hillside you can get a fantastic view of the city, and the Boujeloud Gardens are a great retreat for those seeking a relaxing open space for sitting outside a café, or picnicking together with the family.
Fez also presents a real treat for birdwatchers. In the evenings the skies are full of alpine swifts looking for insects to feed to their chicks safely perched in nests on the city walls.
