Settled on a small island surrounded by wild fjords and mountains, which have been carved out by the winds and the snow over millions of years, Tromsø, one of the largest cities in the Arctic Circle, is like no other place on this earth.
Stroll through the cosy little park of Kongeparken, past the old cathedral and down to the harbour-front. The city was once used as a base by explorers like Roald Amundsen and Fritjof Nansen. Visit the Polar Museum for the fascinating history behind their expeditions and how Tromsø has been an important Arctic settlement for centuries. See the northernmost botanical gardens in the world or spend a few hours in the Northern Norway Art Museum for artistic impressions and interpretations of the wild landscape that cradles the city.
If you want to experience the Arctic for yourself, then start by taking the cable car known as Fjellheisen to the top of Mount Storsteinen. Here you can gaze across the numerous white peaks and fjords that surround the city, and of course, from this viewing platform you also get the perfect panoramic view of the city below. On your descent from the mountain, visit the modernist Arctic Cathedral, before seeking out a boat tour that will take you beyond the city and out onto the deep blue sea. Spot a humpback whale or any of the other local marine animals that thrive here and witness nature at its most serene.
