Guide to Berlin
Once in Berlin, there are a great many of attractions to visit during your holiday. You could walk to the Brandenburg Gate, the only remaining true city gate, restored to its former glory since the demolition of the Berlin Wall in the early 1990s. Most of the entire stretch of the wall which used to separate West and East Berlin was levelled, but you can still see fragments at Potsdamer Platz, where an 80 metre stretch remains, and along the Spree River, which has an even longer section. A small section at Bernauer Strasse is now a memorial. You can also visit the Berlin Wall Museum and Checkpoint Charlie.
For those interested in other periods of history Berlin has many different museums, including the large Museumsinsel complex that houses three museums, the Altes Museum (Old Museum), the Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery) and the Neues Museum (New Museum). All are located on an island in the centre of the River Spree.
Shopping and nightlife are both excellent in Berlin, and the city has hundreds of restaurants and bars to choosefrom - you can only hope to sample a selection on a brief visit. As city breaks go, Berlin is in a class of its own.
"Very nice stay for a first-timer in Berlin!"
***** Written on: 18 February 2014
" Stayed a weekend in february 2014. Very nice hotel with friendly staff and comfortable rooms. I have a bad back, and I therefore sometimes have problems with the hotel-beds. But not here! Slept like a baby! We also booked a deep-tissue massage in the spa center, and this was amazing! The hotel is in walking-distance to Checkpoint-Charlie and other sights and shopping. And there is a small shopping centre just across the street. Perhaps not the most romantic part of the city, but very nice area if you are a first-timer in the city."
"Pleasant Hotel & good rooms, rooftop pool & terrace great in Summer"
***** Written on: 19 January 2014
" The hotel is located nicely and close to many main attractions and shopping areas. Restaurant VOX is great both for BK, Lunch and Dinner and in summer they have a nice street side terrace to eat. Rooms are good and well appointed. Club is ok not outstanding which fails compared to the rest of the hotel for those 3-4 times I have been in the hotel so far. What is nice is the pool (indoor) at the top floor. During summer they open large doors and you can enjoy sun beds around the various terraces as well as some parts with lawn. Very nice for a downtown hotel. General remark, taxis are cheap in Berlin and most of the drivers very friendly. Never had any bad experience which can not be said about many other countries and its taxi drivers. Room Tip: try to avoid the inner garden rooms unless you want total lack of noise from outside."
"Excellent Hotel in a great location"
***** Written on: 10 January 2014
" It had been 15 years since I was last in Berlin. As part of my 2013 Christmas Market's trip, Berlin was included. The city has undergone a transformation, but a lot of the old Eastern bland architecture still remains. The Grand Hyatt is located in the very vibrant Potsdamer Platz area of Berlin. Much of the sightseeing is within a reasonable walking distance. In fact, there was a small Christmas Market just outside the door. A few minutes by subway was the very traditional Christmas Market. The Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, Holocaust Memorial, and Checkpoint Charlie are all within walking distance. Keep in mind that the hotel is about 15 years old so basically it is in the northern European style with a lot of wood in a relatively square, modern style. The rooms are very spacious, and it is worth the extra money for a large room in a European hotel. Our rate included breakfast, and it is sumptuous with so many choices. The four nights spent at the Grand Hyatt Berlin were a great start to our vacation. The only negative is the high cost for the Internet. At the rates charged, it should be included. Room Tip: We had an interior room that faced the interior of the atrium. This was away from the traffic so it was very quiet "
