Lisbon, Portugal

Portugal’s capital city, Lisbon, is situated where the River Tagus meets the Atlantic Ocean, where over twenty centuries of history meets modern twenty-first century life. Built on seven hills, the city has many vantage points from which the Portugese explorers of the 16th century would have been waved off, on their voyages of discovery to Africa, the Americas, and the Far East.

Today, it's the quaint old-world charm of the little squares with their unique shops, bustling cafes, and attractive waterfronts that draws many visitors to Lisbon. Flights to Lisbon are frequent from most UK airports, and there are plenty of cheap hotels in Lisbon if you want to vacation in this wonderfully regenerated city. Among the famous historical sights are the churches of Sao Vicente de Fora, Santa Engracia, and the magnificent St. George's castle.
