European city breaks are an ideal way to get away from it all for a few days, and experience life in a foreign city. For a short break, a city in Europe is exciting, but visiting cities that used to be hidden away behind the Iron Curtain provides an extra thrill.

Prague Holidays

Prague has really come into its own as a short break destination since the demise of communism in the early 1990s. Since then, Prague has become a popular holiday city because of its wealth of cultural attractions and lively, vibrant atmosphere. A Prague weekend break is hardly long enough to fully soak up the atmosphere, but it will provide a great taste of the city that will make you want to come back for more. Prague holidays of a week or more are ideal for families with older children, or for couples with more flexibility once the children have flown the nest.

When to go to Prague?

Prague city breaks are available all year round. Prague weather can be variable in the high summer months of June and July – blue skies and unbroken sunshine are more likely in May or September, making these the ideal months for a Prague city break. The Prague Spring Music Festival is held annually each May, but late summer in the city offers a fantastic opportunity for eating outside in the Wenceslas Square. Christmas brings the traditional markets, stocked with local delicacies and a really authentic, festive atmosphere. Booking your accommodation can be left until just before you depart, taking advantage of last minute rates on our website.

Prague Accommodation

The hotels in Prague offer a range of accommodation to suit all budgets and can be booked through travel agents or direct via our website. English is widely spoken and understood, particularly by hotel and restaurant staff. For romantic city breaks, Prague has several historic and luxurious five star hotels. One of the best known is the Hotel Ambassador Prague, which overlooks the famous Wenceslas Square. For a more modest hotel in Prague, but still as central, try the many three and four star establishments located in the streets just off the main square.

Tourist Attractions

Holidays in Prague, whatever their length, must take in some of the famous landmarks.

• The famous Charles Bridge, with its statues and street vendors, is always busy and interesting even when filled with tourists. But, if you can get up early and see it in the early morning light, it’s a magical and atmospheric place.

• Walk along to one of the riverside cafes and enjoy a drink while watching the sunlight glisten on the Vltava.

• Prague Castle takes up a whole day if you try to see it all – this is largest ancient castle in the world and dates back to the 9th century. It has been the seat of power for Czech rulers since then and is now the official residence of the Czech president. Its grandeur is not in question but there are also some interesting, unique touches, such as the flamboyant blue uniforms of the guards at the entrance. These were designed by Theodor Pisteck, the costume designer from the film Amadeus on the instructions of the first president of the new Czech Republic, Vaclav Havel.

Prague weekend breaks and mid-week city breaks offer a fascinating glimpse of a city that spent much of the 20th century behind the “iron curtain”. No visit is complete without sampling the local Czech beers but at 10-12%, with over twice the alcohol content of UK beers and lagers, be prepared for a hangover!
