City Breaks to Toulon

Toulon is located in the South of France along the Mediterranean coastline. The capital of the Var department and a large military base. There is now a beautiful memorial and museum open in Toulon devoted to those who fought for the area in the Second World War – well worth a visit when on holiday to this historical city. Toulon is now an important city of naval construction, wine, fishing and manufacture of aeronautical equipment. It is also a great starting off point for exploring the rest of the province, St Tropez, Nice, Marseille, Cannes, Casis and Monaco are all just a stones throw away!

Wandering around the city is a great way to get to know the cities turbulent background. The Old Town is filled with beautiful quaint buildings, winding streets, the famous Provencal food market and the ancient cathedral, all depicting simpler times. The upper town – heute ville is a dramatic difference, here lie the monuments of Neopoleon III, such as the stunning opera house, railway station and Place de la Liberte. This relatively unknown city is absolutely bulging with things to do. Musee de la Marine is a favourite for adults and children, check out the ways of ship building through the ages. The Cathedrale St Marie Major, built in Romanesque style is fascinating.

Toulon is also an unknown beach paradise, the shores of Mourillon are a definite favourite for tourists and locals alike. Filled with shops, bars, restaurants, parks and children’s entertainment it is understandable! A great place to relax, buy your souvenirs and stroll around. Make sure you dine here – this district is renowned for the best restaurants, local and international cuisines. Festivals are also rife here during the summer months. Plage de Notre Dame is a firm favourite.
