Istanbul City Breaks

Taking a break in a city in Europe, especially a city break in Istanbul, is now almost as popular as a trip to the coast at the weekend was, thirty years ago. European city breaks are a complete change and a great way to relax while broadening your horizons and discovering the capitals of Europe. As Europe itself expands so do the potential destinations, and Istanbul, Turkey is an exotic option for a very special short break.

Istanbul holidays and city breaks have become more popular as Turkey's tourism industry has blossomed. Many people in the UK choose Istanbul as their annual holiday and short city breaks spot because of its wonderful summer climate, its fascinating history, fabulous coastal resorts, and hotels. Flights only and short breaks are available from the UK on our website. If you opt for a last minute city break, you can get some great deals both on the flight price and the cost of your accommodation.

Istanbul Hotels

Istanbul hotels offer an exciting mix of ancient and modern. Some old town houses have been beautifully renovated, such as the Celal Sultan Hotel, which can be found in the most ancient part of Istanbul city. Opened in 1996 it reflects the Byzantine and Ottoman heritage of the city. You can also choose from a variety of modern Istanbul hotels, ranging from luxurious 5 star establishments to the cheap and cheerful guest houses and inns, where you can get a room for as little as £10 per night. Ideal for cheap city breaks to Istanbul, this romantic city straddling east and west.

Flights to Istanbul

You can get flights directly to Istanbul from Manchester or London in just under four hours. British Airways (www.ba.com) offers two direct flights a day from London Heathrow to Istanbul. Turkish Airlines (www.turkishairlines.com) offer daily direct scheduled services from London Heathrow and Manchester to Istanbul, and many direct flights from London Luton Airport.

Quick city guide

Most people find that city break holidays go by quickly, and in Istanbul in particular you will want to make the most of your time to experience the rich culture of the ancient buildings and monuments. The old part of the city has a vast number of historical churches, palaces, castles, synagogues, towers, and columns, including the ancient Serpentine Column, which dates back to 479 BC. Not to be missed is the Blue Mosque, one of the most important landmarks of the city, founded by Sultan Ahmet I in 1609.

Why Travel to Istanbul?

Apart from being historically and architecturally spectacular, with a skyline of mosques and minarets surrounded by water, Istanbul is the only city in the world that lies on two continents. There's plenty of sunshine, green and blue space, OK food, good beer, terrible wine, great prices. The Turks are very friendly and not too pushy even when selling a carpet [tho' don't believe every word they say]. It's a lot safer than most European cities and the shopping is sensational. And by the way, Istanbul is not Turkey's capital - Ankara is.
