Naples, known in Italian as Napoli, lies on the coast of Italy at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. It’s the biggest city in the south of Italy, and a bustling port with a long and fascinating history. As a holiday destination it offers the visitor excellent food, good weather, a wide range of cultural pursuits, and interesting tourist attractions.
Naples makes an excellent choice for a short break because much of the ancient city centre can be visited on foot. Naples is also famous for its food. Thought to have been the actual birthplace of pizza, its Neapolitan specialities include pizza margherita, pizza marinara, spaghetti, sfogliatelle (pastries filled with orange flavoured ricotta or almond paste) and babà (a yeast cake of which rum baba is the best-known form).
Popular day trips from Naples include a trip to the volcano of Mount Vesuvius, the ancient site of Pompeii, and a visit to the islands of Procida, Capri, and Ischia.
