Bursting with more city attractions than any other city in the Baltic region, Riga really has something to shout about. Riga is an ever expanding city on the up and up. Riga is the Baltic business capital and a wise old city that is in fact older than Stockholm and St Petersburg. In past times it was often referred to as a bridge between the east and the west. Steeped in history too this fabulous city ticks all the boxes for a really enjoyable cheap holiday.
Strolling around the city is a tourist attraction on its own, this youthful city has been heavily renovated, the old tat has been replaced by the new glittering bars, cafes and boutiques. The old town is filled with winding cobbled streets, stunning squares and long church spires. Must visits whilst in the old town are The Dome Cathedral and St Peters Lutheran Church. The new town is filled with really impressive art nouveau architecture left over from the Germanic era. Further down the River Daugava is the cities port, this thriving area is a picturesque view of all that is great in the city. The city is filled with fine galleries and museums, you are not going to get bored easily, the best is The Riga Open-Air Ethnographic Museum, this fabulous cultural experience re-enacts of how life once was in the city.
Enjoying relatively long, dark winters it is no surprise that the city really kicks off during the summer months. The cities many parks fill up, the streets become a wealth of outdoor cafes and restaurants and even the canals and river are used for a relaxing row! Don’t forget you Riga Black Balzams and Amber before you leave too. Find fabulous shops and markets in the Old Town for your souvenirs. Even take a trip down to the coast in the winter months to see if the seas have brought in any pieces of amber from the storms!
Riga is a magical city, that shows no sign of sinking into the river – every 100 years the devil asks if Riga is ready. Every year the answer is no as the city has grown more beautiful and more loved that the year before! With thousands of hotel beds and budget airlines flying into the cities international airport there is no excuse to visit this Baltic Gem.
