Santorini

Santorini, Greece

Santorini has its own airport, just six km outside the capital city, Fira. There are scheduled flights via Athens or charter flights direct from London and other European destinations, so it's easy to find cheap air tickets to Santorini.

Tourist Attractions on Santorini

The island of Santorini is known as the ‘black pearl of the Aegean' and has been linked to the myth of Atlantis. With year-round sunshine and cheap air tickets, Santorini makes a great place for a family holiday. Its blue-domed churches, whitewashed houses, and mysterious black sands make it one of the most visually dramatic of the Greek islands.

You can catch a glimpse of Santorini's history when you visit the excavations at Akrotiri, close to the fabulous Red Beach. Other cultural sites on Santorini island include Mesa Gonia's Byzantine church, and the Venetian houses in Fira. In Vothonas you can visit St. Anna, the island's oldest church, and if you fancy, see the fabulous working windmill on Santorini, famously reproduced in many photographs.

Santorini has a dormant volcano with the black lava sands of Kamari beach bearing witness to the island's volcanic past. The towns of Fira and Oia cling to the edge of the volcano, and you can get a splendid view by catching a ferry across the caldera. If one volcano isn't enough, you can also sail to the volcanic isles of Palea Kameni.

For watersports, including diving and snorkelling, the waters off Perissa offer unrivalled warmth and clarity, and Perissa beach itself is a wonderful example of a dark, unusual Santorini beach. Other good beaches include quiet Vlyhada and family-friendly Monolithos. Santorini nightlife is centred on the bars and night clubs in the capital, Fira, and to a lesser extent on those of Oia, Kamari, and Perissa.
