Holidays to Ajaccio
Ajaccio, the largest town in Corsica and regional capital, lays half-way down the west coast of the island in the Gulf of Ajaccio, surrounded by mountains which have a covering of snow right into summer. Its harbor is second in size only to that of Bastia and it also has an airport. Its situation, beautiful beaches and mild climate (average winter temperature 13.3 C/56 F) attract large numbers of visitors. Ajaccio is an elegant city, pleasant to live in and a delight to discover, full of charm of a small Mediterranean town with a rich and varied architectural heritage.
Ajaccio's claim to fame is Napoleon Bonaparte who was born here in 1769 and on August 15th every year the town celebrates his birthday in style. From the time of Bonaparte to the Premier Consul, from Napoleon to the Emperor, the child of Ajaccio can be seen everywhere, from squares to statues, from landmarks to souvenirs, Ajaccio the Imperial Town has a rich memory and is a place full of history.
Guarding the entrance of the gulf, Les Iles Sanguinaires turn to a crimson colour in front of the plunging of the sun into the sea. La route Des Sanguinaires Ajaccio's coastal road, offers numerous inlets and beautiful sandy beaches. At the gates of Ajaccio there are authentic villages, flowing rivers, high mountain pastures and chestnut groves, snow covered fields and imposing mountains, all of which characterize the originality and variety of Corsica, along with its contrast and harmony.
