Zagreb . Croatia’s capital city and definitely a European gem in both looks and personality! As the power keg of Croatia and having been under the rule of many other nations there are lots to see and do on a cheap holiday! Although it only became Zagreb in 1850 and became Croatia’s capital in the nineties the city has been inhabited since the middle ages! A maze of medieval streets and Baroque architecture, Zagreb is filled with sightseeing opportunities. The old town (upper), the new town (lower) and then new Zagreb which is largely the business and residential districts.

With the Trg Bana Jelacica square a great place to begin your adventure. The tourist office is also located here so finding things won’t be a problem. English is widely used in Zagreb largely for the tourists benefit. Walks along the Tkalciceva Ulica are great, at the far end of the avenue lies the spectacular stone gate with its fascinating Virgin Mary, be sure to visit the Presidential Palace, Parliament and St Marks Church too. Lower Zagreb is great for shopping and picking up souvenirs as well as visiting the newer museums and galleries. The Gallery of Modern Art, the Ethnographic and Mimara Museums are all very popular. At New Zagreb take the chance to ride on the one hundred year old funicular railway too! Food stands are dotted all over the city for great quick fix of hunger but the cities restaurants are a must. Boasting the best of Croatian cuisine and everything else! Evenings rap up nicely in one of the cities trendy bars and nightclubs too!
