Customer reviews of Puerto Plata

January 2010 - staying at CELUISMA PARAISO TROP 2*

We had a good time and enjoyable holiday.
One point I would like to bring up, though: I phoned Fleetway and requested a vegan meal for my girlfriend on the flights because she is lactose-intolerant. This was ignored by you and she had to eat whatever food was available on the flight because the airline had received no special requests, despite you saying you had noted it down. This resulted in her being very ill on the flight back, which was very unsatisfactory. I'd requested you get her a vegan meal two weeks before we went on holiday.

November 2009 - staying at RIU MERENGUE

We were very unsure if we had booked the right hotel after reading reviews on Trip advisor which had a lot of negative comments which turned out to be completely unjustified. The hotel has a fantastic setting with its own great private beach and just 15 mins in a Taxi to Puerta Plata where you can enjoy merengue music with the locals at Tipico, Peurta Plata, a great venue with good local bands.
The hotel is not 5 star but the food is good with plenty of choice and the enthusiastic smiling staff more than make up for it with great service 24/7.
If you want a 5 star hotel, go to Sandy Lane in Barbados and pay £500 per night with no food, drink of flight included or if you want a great value for money holiday in a fantastic location, go to the Riu Merengue

August 2009 - staying at BLUE BAY VILLAS DORADA

The Dominican Republic is a great holiday destination but chose your hotel carefully. It may be worth paying a little extra for 5 star. We went to a place that was advertised as 4.5 star but 3 star would have been closer to the mark. The "balcony" was actually a patio as we were on the ground floor! The hotel had apparently been renovated a few years ago but you would not have known it from the cracks, open fuse box, and gap between door and floor which one night we had to block with a towel to stop the rain coming in! The staff whilst friendly were a little too pushy to try to sign us up for extra marketing / excursions which is not what you want on holiday. The food was reasonable although if you have any special dietary requirements do not expect them to be understood. If you are after the type of holiday where everything revolves around alcohol and you don't want to set foot outside the hotel, this would be the ideal destination for you. We personally found that it got a little too much after a while. However, if you are brave enough to venture out into the country you will discover a fascinating place with proud people and a wonderful history and culture. There are just probably better hotels to base yourself in if that is what you are after. We might return to the Dominican Republic in the future but if we do it will probably not be to this hotel, and we will fork out the extra for a 5 star (which will probably be equivalent to a 4 star elsewhere in the world). Do your research carefully and happy holidays!!
