Cairo, Egypt

Cairo is the capital of Egypt and the seventh biggest city in the world. Located in the north of the country on the banks of the river Nile, it’s a popular travel destination with many different types of travellers. A Cairo holiday offers a glimpse of ancient Egypt and the Nile, against the backdrop of a vibrant, modern city with a host of tourist amenities.

Cairo holidays – Contrasting Worlds

If you like historic monuments you'll be spoilt for choice in this vibrant city and its surrounding area. Highlights of your visit to Cairo, Egypt could include the world-famous ancient pyramids, and the Great Sphinx at nearby Giza, Saladin's Citadel, the Virgin Mary's Tree, the Hanging Church, and the Cairo Tower. The best Cairo museum is arguably the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities (sometimes called the Egyptian Museum in Cairo) which contains the biggest collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts in the world.

Many visitors choose to combine a Nile cruise either starting from, or ending in, a visit to the city of Cairo. Cairo itself is situated on the banks of the Nile and many cruises also feature Luxor and Aswan. If you don't fancy a Nile cruise, you could spend a few hours on a Felluca sailboat trip instead. Other tourist attractions in Cairo include the the Al Rifai and Sultan Hassan mosques, the Cairo Botanical Gardens, and the Zoo.

Cairo combines the ancient and the modern in a city that's become a true melting pot of different ways of life and cultures. You can see all the different levels of living from third world to opulent lifestyles, ancient beliefs and artefacts, to modern Islam and Christianity in this one incredible crossroads in time and space.

Cairo Food

A trip into Cairo city makes the perfect opportunity to sample the delights of Cairo food. Egyptian cuisine has much in common with Lebanese and Turkish food. Specialities you might like to try include mezze (starter dishes similar to Spanish tapas), koshary (sometimes spelt koshari - a bowl of rice, noodles, lentils, and fried onion in tomato sauce), baba ghanoush (smoked aubergine), hummus (chickpea paste) and fuul (mashed fava beans). If you still have room for an Egyptian dessert after all that you might like to try some om ali (traditional rice pudding) or honeyed pastries, perhaps with a mint tea or Arabic coffee, and a sheesha (shisha) pipe to follow!
