Marsa Alam was originally a small fishing village on the west coast of Egypt, but in the past few years it has become a popular tourist resort on Egypt's Red Sea coast. The sudden popularity of Marsa Alam as a travel destination is due in part to the construction of its international airport in 2001, and the subsequent availability of cheap airline tickets. However Marsa Alam's popularity is also attributed to its discovery by scuba divers, who appreciate its unspoilt coral reefs and diverse marine life.
