Mersa Matruh is a Mediterranean seaport in Egypt known as Amunia during Ancient Egyptian times and during the reign of Alexander The Great. Mersa Matruh is 240 km (149 miles) west of Alexandria and 222 km from Sallum, on the main highway from the Nile Delta to the Libyan border. Another highway leads south from the town, toward the Western Desert and the oases of Siwa and Bahariya.
Marsa Matruh is a main Egyptian tourist city, and serves as a getaway resort for Europeans and Cairenes eager to flee the capital in the sweltering summer months. It is served by Mersa Matruh Airport.
The city is known for its white soft sands and calm transparent waters; the bay is protected from the high seas by a series of rocks forming a natural breakwater, with a small opening to allow light vessels in. The beachside town has been a favourite with the Egyptians for years, with families heading up there every summer to escape the hot desert temperatures.
International restaurants and fancy hotels have sprung up over the last few years, but for the most part the town looks the same as it did a decade ago. Carpet shops, clothes shops, jam-packed markets selling everything from fruit to spices, and mosque prayer bells ring out around the town. As far as beaches go, one of the most popular strips is Cleopatra’s Beach, on the outskirts of the town. Said to be where the Egyptian queen herself used to come to bathe, the bright turquoise bay is backed by craggy rocks and rolling sand dunes.
