Biarritz is located in south, eastern France, on the shores of the Bay of Biscay. It is one of the most popular parts of the French Basque country, located just 11 miles away from the Spanish border. It was a popular retreat for European Royals. The wife of Napoleon III built a Palace on the beach and invited guests such a Queen Victoria. The Palace is now the stunning Hotel du Palais. The towns architecture is an array of 19th century residences and some typically, all things Basque. The city is lined with beautifully stone built city residences, grand looks and prices too! This vibrant cosmopolitan town is filled with superb beaches and luscious golf courses. Surfing was born in Biarritz, every year surfers from all over the world come to ride the waves of the Bay of Biscay at the Biarritz surf festival. The two best beaches in Biarritz are Grande Plage and Plage Miramir. Both perfect for catching some rays. Grand Plage has more going on, with plenty of water sports and a promenade lined with bars, restaurants and shops. Cycling, walking and hiking are also really enjoyable on the near-by mountains. The Landes pine forest and the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains are popular walking areas. Whilst on holiday in Biarritz the cuisine is very pleasing. The sea food “fruits de mer” and the world renowned Foie Gras have got to be tried. For the less brave the hams produced in the area are very tasty – look out for Jambon de Bayonne.
