Corfu is a Greek island which lies in the Ionian Sea, just three km off the coast of Albania. Holidays to Corfu - Beaches

Corfu's most famous beach is Canal D'Amour (the 'Channel of Love') at Sidari, situated on Corfu's north western coastline, some twenty miles from the old town. Sidari offers sandy beaches and pretty coves around a sweeping bay. The sea is good for children as it's shallow and calm, but for also great for swimmers and active holidaymakers, due to the range of watersports available at the beach, including windsurfing and waterskiing.

Another favourite resort is Roda, which is situated on the north coast of Corfu, Greece. Roda is around 35km from Corfu town and is perfectly located on the quiet coast between Sidari and Acharavi. Roda offers safe, sandy beaches, seaside taverns, car hire, shopping and a range of accommodation. Watersports are available from the beach and horse riding can be undertaken nearby.

While visiting Corfu's beaches consider taking a trip along the coast in one of the glass bottomed boats. You can arrange boat trips from the beach, at either Arillas or Sidari, to nearby islands such as Mathraki and Ericussa (sometimes written as 'Ericousa'), as well as longer trips to Paxos, Kefalonia, and even Albania from Arillas. Some of these trips can be booked through travel websites before you arrive at Corfu.

Sightseeing and Culture on Corfu

Corfu town's old city, with its labyrinth of 'kantounia,' or narrow streets paved with cobblestones, offers a glimpse into the island's ancient history. No visit to the island would be complete without a wonder down the Liston, a stately esplanade between the town and the citadel, now home to many of the best restaurants and bars. If you eat or drink too much, a horse-drawn carriage will take you back to your hotel in style.

The island of Corfu is steeped in mythology and occupies an important place in the myths of Hercules, the Argonauts, and Odysseus. Several films have featured Corfu, including the James Bond movie 'For Your Eyes Only', filmed in the Ionian Sea and Venetian fortress. Gerald Durrell's book 'My Family and Other Animals' tells the story of his life on Corfu, and the TV and film versions were both filmed on the island.

If you travel to Corfu, you might like to see a performance at the fortified old citadel Palaio Frourio, a Venetian fortress which is now used for cultural events. There's a regular programme of sound and light shows where historical events are recreated in the most spectacular fashion.

A good day trip is to Mount Pantokrator which, at 2970 feet above sea level, is the highest point on the island. On a clear day you can admire the views across Corfu and into Albania. Other day trips include Lake Korisson, a nature reserve in the south of the island close to the long, sandy beaches of Halicouna and Issos.

Music is an important part of Corfu's culture. Cantades, choral songs often accompanied by the guitar, are performed by singers in Corfu town, which is also home to three marching wind bands giving regular weekend promenade concerts throughout the summer and during Holy Week (Easter) celebrations.
