Halkidiki

Halkidiki (sometimes spelt Chalkidiki or Chalcidice) is a peninsula of mainland Greece just south of the city of Thessaloniki, jutting out into the Aegean Sea like a three-fingered hand. It consists of three main areas, Sithonia, Agion Oros (which includes the legendary Mount Athos) and Kassandra (formerly Pallene).

For your holidays, Halkidiki offers white sandy beaches, lush pine forests, mysterious monasteries, good hotels of all standards, and cheap airline tickets. Whilst it shares some attractions with the Greek islands, most notably its fabulous beaches and weather, Halkidiki is noted for being a nature-lover's paradise. With its tropical flowers, climbing vines, and wooded hillsides, this is an area to appreciate nature in all its raw beauty. Watersports enthusiasts will also enjoy the clear blue waters and plenty of opportunities for diving, windsurfing, and snorkelling.

Halkidiki does not have an airport so your airline tickets will be for flights via Thessaloniki (just sixteen km away) or Athens.

Several of these beaches have won Blue Flags for their clean white sands and crystal-clear waters, and they're often fringed by beautiful pine groves.

When you travel to Halkidiki you might also want to visit some of the famous historical sites of the area, including the ruined city of Olynthos, the remains of the 5th century Neposi Palaiochori castle, and the archaeological museum in the capital of Polygyros. You may also like to explore the Cave of Petralona where the skull of a 200,000 year old primitive man was found. Alternatively you could take a boat trip round Mount Athos, the oldest monastic republic in existence.

Halkidiki is famous for its wine, and you can taste it at the factory in Tsantali, where you can also sample local olive oil and honey; A little further afield visitors can enjoy the delicious fresh seafood in the villages of Nea Skioni, Possidi, and Siviri. In July and August open air concerts are often held in Sivri's amphitheatre performed by singers from all over Greece.
