City breaks to Bergamo
Bergamo, just 40 km away from Milan! For all those looking for a fascinating medieval city for a well deserved break, Bergamo will have just what you are looking for. One of only four Italian cities still surrounded by its old defence walls! It is also ideally located at the foot of the Alps and near Lake Como.
Bergamo is absolutely steeped in history. The city is basically split into two. With the Old City – Bergamo Alta is located on a higher level to the new town – Bergamo Bassa located lower. You can go on a funky funicular between the two!
The Old town is adored by tourists in search of history. The bells of the Civic Tower still chime 100 times to state the old night time closing of the walls. The old square, Piazza Vecchia is an enchanting place. The Santa Maria Maggiore is on the piazza. The home of extreme statues and carvings. A visit to the Palazzo della Ragione is a must on your cheap holiday to Bergamo. Now the site of big exibitions this beautiful site was first built in the 12th century and later rebuilt in the 16th century. The lion of St Mark is still at home on the buildings facade, in memory of the long Venetian dominance. Also check out the sundial at the atrium. The Rocca castle is also a great day out as well as the museums of the city. Museo Civico Archeologico and the Caffi Natural Science museum are both great.
The lower town is home to the administrative sections as well as quite a lot of the cities residences. Make sure you visit the picture museum of Carrara academy and the gallery of modern and contemporary art. With restaurants and shops dotted all over the city you’re never going to not get what you want either! With many hotels and easy access to an international airport this city break is so easy.
