Holidays to the Calabria coastline
The Calabria coastline is located in the region of Calabria. In southern Italy just below Naples. It lies in the toe of the boot of Italy. The region has recently enjoyed a recent boom in the tourist market. People are flocking to the area to enjoy Calabria’s unspoilt beauty, dynamic mountain landscapes and gorgeous beaches. The charming area has still remained much of its traditional charm and simple lifestyles, making a holiday to Calabria the ideal for RnR. This area is widely known for its prehistoric settlements, visit the array of ruins from Greek, Roman, Byzantine and the Norman times as well as beautiful churches and the regions many art galleries!
This dynamic island even has a small ski area in the inland regions! People flock to this region to enjoy great walking, hiking, horse riding, bird watching and low key adventure holidays. But the main pull to the region is definitely its great beaches with bright blue seas. With the Ionian Sea on the west coast and the Tyrrenian Sea on the east. Water sports are available on the beaches as well as opportunities for diving and snorkelling. The main areas in the region for tourists are Scalea and Tropea. Both resorts offer shops, bars, restaurants and hotels as well as sandy beaches. Capo Vaticano resort offers the best beaches in the region, an endless stretch of white sands and turquoise blue seas! If its history you’re looking for head to the towns of Amantea, Diamante and off course the regions capital Reggio di Calabria. The beach resort of Pizzo is great to, boasting an amazing beach looked over by a historical castle. Pizzo is also a good place to pick up quirky souvenirs. Definitely check out the local food shops in the region to, pick up some really tasty olive oils, vinegars, olives and wine at great value!
Visits to the many inland villages are also well advised. Wandering through these villages is like going back in time. Many on the west coast even still have heavy Greek influences.
The food in the region is absolutely to die for. Pastas and chesses are very flavoursome, with an element of spice to. Greek ingredients are also used quite a lot too. And the local tipple is white wine. Definitely try the spicy sausage and antipasto. All can be enjoyed in one of the many restaurants complete with al fresco dining and great service.
