Cheap Holidays to Sicily

Sicily

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and an autonomous region of Italy. Bordered by the Tyrrenhian Sea to the north and the Mediterranean Sea to the south, it enjoys a warm climate, good beaches, Baroque towns, and excellent seafood, making the island an enduring favourite with visitors to the Mediterranean. Whether you’re looking for luxury holidays in Sicily with plenty of cultural attractions, cheap all-inclusive holidays with good food and watersports, or a last minute package holiday for the family, you’ll find it all on the beautiful, friendly island of Sicily.

Sicily has a fascinating history, with Greek, Arab, Roman, and Norman influences all reflected in its architecture, landscape, and culture. Palermo is the capital of Sicily and is a busy port with ferry connections to many places, including Stromboli and its still-live volcano. Palermo also has a Norman cathedral, several interesting museums, catacombs, and a lively market. Taormina is a fashionable resort by the beach with a fantastic open-air Greek theatre and an annual film festival in June. Another popular seaside resort is Cefalù which has narrow medieval streets and some of the best beaches in Sicily. Both towns are featured in package holiday brochures, so if you’re looking for a cheap last minute holiday you could opt to stay at Cefalù or Taormina.

Siracusa, sometimes called Syracuse, is an ancient Greek town which was home to Archimedes, and holds classical drama performances in its Greek theatre. The inland town of Enna is set on a hilltop and affords spectacular views of the island.

Situated on the east coast of the island, Catania is a Baroque city that makes an excellent base for visiting Mount Etna, the world’s tallest active volcano. If you’re staying in the north of Sicily you might like to sail around the Aeonian Islands, sometimes known as the Lipari Islands. Luxury holiday offers in Sicily often include tours of the islands and it’s well-worth exploring the sights while you’re here.

Several budget airlines fly to Sicily so it’s a great destination for cheap family holidays. There are two airports on the island, at Palermo and Catania, and you can fly direct from London and regional airports, or via Milan Malpensa. You might want to combine your flights with hotels for a cheap family package holiday. Towns and resorts such as Agrigento, Castelbuono, Cefalu, Floridia, Fontane Bianche, Letojanni, Marina D'agro, Milazzo, Palermo, Siracusa, and Taormina all feature regularly in holiday brochures, so you’re sure to find a travel destination that suits you. Sicily weather is Mediterranean and winters are mild so it’s a good destination for an October package holiday winter sun break.
