Turin lies in the centre of northern Italy. A major city for both business and culture. The capital of the Piedmont region was the host of the 2006 winter Olympics. With a large population of over 2million people this modest city is well worth a visit. Located on the River Po and near to the Alps, this city offers the best of both worlds – a lively city atmosphere with plenty of opportunities for adventure! Summer is definitely the best time to visit Turin – with warmer temperatures than the winter months. Turin has a continental climate and the colder months can fall below freezing.
Known as “automobile city” Turin is often underestimated and thought of as purely an industrial town. With the help of the Olympics tourists are now flocking and the city has undergone a transformation. It was out with the old and in with the new – now bursting with galleries, museums, bars and restaurants! This city is steeped in history, The Roman quarters are very much still alive with funky boutiques and eateries. The architecture from the times of the Savoy ruling are also very visible, with lavish palaces dotted around the city.
The Mole Antonelliana is a very popular attraction. Home of the Holy Shroud and a popular pilgrim retreat. The national cinema museum is also located here and makes a great day out! Go to the top of the tower for the best views of the city. Wander through the streets of the city and admire the unique churches – built under different rulings and architectural types. The old Royal Palaces are also spectacular!
Whilst on a cheap holiday to Turin be sure to try some chocolate. Solid chocolate was first created in Turin! Enjoy the varied delicacies ranging from traditional Italian dishes to those of the Savoy regions! Spoil yourself in the designer shops of Via Roma and steel away some Italian bargains in the numerous markets.
