Cheap Holidays to Formentera

The long sandy beaches of Formentera are truly stunning with their white sands and turquoise blue seas. Beach bars are generally the hubs of these beaches, cocktails, San Miguel and light snacks always on offer. The Island is Spanish although Italian is a widely heard language during the summer months.

Formentera is fabulous for watersports as the wind conditions are perfect – in 2007 the island hosted the Techno 293 OD World Championships for juniors and youths. The snorkelling and diving opportunities in Formentera are also not to be missed, with hundreds of small caves to be discovered, the marine life is greatly admired. There are two main watersports schools on the Island – Wet4fun and Vellmari. The big hotels however all offer their own equipment and tuition.
The stunning cove of Cala Sahona offers you idyllic walks along the cliff above as well as the chance to rent pedal boats from the beach. You can drift out to sea and admire the luxury yachts often sailed onto the island.
The less well known beaches of Es Calo and Plaja Migjorn are a must visit, these less busy beaches are a favourite with families. Es Calo is a small fishing village with fabulous restaurants and a really relaxed atmosphere. Many of the larger hotels are located along Playa Migjorn so are more used by tourists than locals.
Illetes are by far the best beaches on the Island, however get there early as they really fill up. They are on the spits of Formentera and are truly beautiful. On the drive up to these beaches are salt flats where flamingos can sometimes be seen.
The capital of the Island is San Francisco. The other main towns are San Fernando and Es Pujols. Es Pujols is the liveliest of all the towns on the Island, with many restaurants, bars, and evening market and the islands only club – Xueno.

In the evening one of the best things to do is to take the Old Roman Road walk up La Mola (the domineering hill on the East of the Island). The restaurant at the top of the hill is the best place to dine, you have views of the whole Island, with the sun setting into the sea it’s really spectacular. At the top of the hill is the Islands famous hippy market where souvenirs can be brought at amazing prices. While you’re up there a trip to the lighthouse is also enjoyable.
Holidays to Formentera are definitely a break from the norm, this Mediterranean Paradise has got to be enjoyed. With idyllic beaches and scenery, delicious local foods such as ali-oli, and lovely, lively loacals this island is a great experience.
