Information About Tenerife
The fourth largest of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote lies just seventy miles off the coast of Africa. The volcanic eruptions that occurred in the 18th and 19th centuries give it an alien "out of space" appearance. A landscape unspoilt and devoid of high rise buildings, Lanzarote boasts a terrain of contrasts that comprise beautiful white beaches and breathtaking volcanic rock formations, making it one of Europe's most unique hotspots for both year-round and summer travel.
Tenerife Culture
While Canary culture proudly upholds its aboriginal customs, Tenerife island also embraces a thriving cosmopolitan culture for which it's renowned. At the same time Tenerife is a unique haven appealing to those seeking more than just sun, sea, and sand. From architecture, sculpture, and the fine arts, to crafts, music, and dialect, Tenerife boasts a proud artistic community and many of the buildings, both humble and elaborate, illustrate Andalucian and Portuguese influence.
Carnival is one of the most vibrant times of year to be in Tenerife, with celebrations on the island known to be the next best thing to Brazil's Rio de Janeiro. The colourful parades, huge array of stalls, folk dancing, and incredible costumes of the participants, Carnival is an exceptional time of year and one of the most important elements of Tenerife culture. With the warm, outdoor orientated lifestyle, expect to enjoy simple yet extremely tasty grilled fish, meats, and vegetables; whether seated at an outside terrace overlooking the sea, in the old part of town, or even a city apartment, Tenerife offers plenty of leisurely choice to enjoy the great Canary island life. Hot and tantalising, pollo en ajo (chicken in garlic) is a traditional favourite, as are Papas Arugadas ("wrinkled" potatoes in their skins, fried and served with a traditional sauce).
