One of the bigger islands along the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia, Hvar is a seaside gem which serves as a beautiful, authentic coastal town - where visitors can enjoy a slower pace of life. Hvar has been populated for over 5,000 years and some of the main historic sites here stem from the Greek, Roman and Venetian colonisations. In the eponymously named capital of Hvar, you can still see the remnants of the latter, who, from the 13th century onwards, turned the city into an important port. Climb the steep hill that rises above the city until you make it to the old Spanjola Fortress. The walls and towers offer panoramic views of the red-tiled buildings below and the many small islands that are scattered around Hvar. Descending the hill via the narrow path, you can stroll around the scenic streets of the city and head for St Stephen Square, where the bell tower of the old cathedral rises above the houses. Next to the square you’ll find the romantic harbour, from where you can go on daytrip to the nearby Paklinski Islands.
