Known as the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’, Sri Lanka is a rare Asian gem sparkling in the tropical sun. Although often thought of in the same breath as India, the island country is a separate state and only shares proximity with its neighbour – as well as a fierce cricket rivalry. A unique region of serene beaches, vast tea plantations, exotic animals and stunning natural sights, Sri Lanka is a great place to visit for travelling, spotting wildlife and surfing. The stretches of sand in Sri Lanka are particularly picturesque, visitors needing to relax ocean-side should visit one of the equally gorgeous Hikkaduwa, Negombo or Unawatuna beaches.
Sri Lanka is home to a plethora of places to visit. From the ancient Buddhist shrines and royal palaces of Kataragama and Sigiriya, to the Dutch colonial ramparts of Galle Fort, as well as the lush tea plantations and magnificent national parks. Udawalawe National Park is home to herds of elephants pacing through sunburnt greenery and guided tours will take you up close to these majestic endangered creatures.
