Regularly topping the charts for the happiest place to live, it’s easy to see why the Danes are so fond of their country. Denmark is a place full of natural beauty, quaint architecture, and some amazing cities which offer everything you need from a holiday. The Scandinavian country has a storied history which is easy to see in its wonderful capital Copenhagen, while the art, food, and nightlife scene are also popular in the city.
As with many countries, the best place to start for a Denmark holiday is in its capital city, Copenhagen. A city which brings to mind the image of quaint colourful houses by the city’s river, open sandwiches, and Carlsberg served in every bar and restaurant. It’s a rare European capital that can be accessed easily by foot should you feel in the mood for walking, though the public transport system is well-appointed and convenient when you want to rest. A happy medium that many locals do in the city is taking one of the many rental bicycles found throughout the city. With wide cycle lanes, it’s a safe and easy way to get around – though if you’re visiting in the winter months, remember to wear gloves when you’re zooming down the roads, the icy winds are real!
In terms of sights, Tivoli Gardens and Amusement Park are a wonderful sight to see in all seasons. Perfect for a family day trip in the summer, it’s a great spot for a romantic stroll in the evenings. In winter, it turns into a veritable Christmas wonderland for when you want your dose of festive feelings. A quirky site in the city is Christiania, which is a non-conformist haven that has been operated by squatters since 1971 – and it’s a place like no other. This hub represents a hotbed of creativity with art and graffiti on display throughout. Those who prefer to see their art more conventionally will find the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art a great spot on the outskirts of the city.
Away from the capital, Denmark also plays host to the original Legoland in Billund – an ideal day trip for all the family. Another city high on history and beautiful architecture is that of Aarhus. As if straight from a fairy tale, the quaint little houses and shops of the Old Town create a real storybook feeling. Those wanting a beach holiday can find several gorgeous ones in Denmark. Søndervig Beach was recently voted as the country’s best beach and can be found in West Jutland, Amager Beach Park is the option in Copenhagen, and wide beaches and high dunes can be found at Skagen, right next to the North Sea.
