The westernmost of the Sporades islands, Skiathos is divided between the homonymous capital with its neighbouring villages in the south and the ancient ruins and rugged cliffs that align the northern coast. A scenic holiday destination with lots of history and local charm just waiting to be explored.
Famous for its beaches, perfect water and luxurious resorts, the island of Skiathos has attracted sun-seekers and holidaymakers for decades. The spirit and history of the island however is present throughout the landscape and can be experienced around every corner. One of the more curious aspects of Skiathos’ past is the relocation and subsequent re-relocation of its capital. Plagued by pirates over centuries, the local population decided to uproot from Skiathos Town and move to the more easily defendable coastal town of Kastro. After the maritime menace was eliminated by the nascent Greek nation, the islanders decided to resettle in the old capital, which has remained the main city ever since. Today you can explore the ruins around Kastro, which inhabit a small peninsula on the northern coast, facing onto the wide Aegean Sea. Nearby, you’ll also find the absolutely stunning Lalaria Beach with its turquoise water, white cliffs and the iconic rock that appears to dart in and out of the sea like a giant sea monster. On your way back south from the jagged landscapes of the north, stop by the beautiful Evangelistria Monastery and learn about its part in the formation of Greece as a modern nation. If the midday sun is getting too much, then escape to the white beaches on the west coast. From the wide stretches along Koukounaries and Banana Beach to the smaller sandy nooks of Troulos and Kolios Beach, if it’s complete relaxation by the gentle Aegean waves you’re looking for, you’re spoilt for choice here on Skiathos. Back in the island’s capital, you can stroll through the charming little streets and discover lots of adorable shops that sells local produce and souvenirs. As the sun retires over the Greek hills, find a taverna or restaurant frequented by locals and savour the cool breeze from the sea and you tuck into a scrumptious Greek dinner.
