Time to Read

When it comes to travelling, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more uplifting two-word phrase than ‘winter sun’. With those two little words, you can almost feel your body start to warm up. You forget about frost on the windshield, thermal undershirts, and being able to see your breath as soon as you step outside, and you start to get excited again. Booking a winter sun holiday means you have something to look forward to among the seemingly endless dark evenings, and ensures you come back feeling completely refreshed.

So with that in mind, we thought it was high time to compile a list of the best places to visit for a healthy dose of winter sun.

The Canary Islands

Definitively Spanish by its culture and language, the Canary Islands’ location is actually closer to mainland Africa than it is to Spain – adding up to a wonderfully warm climate the whole year round. Which means… winter sun. Choose between Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife for some equally great Spanish island getaways. Boasting incredible volcanic beaches, stunning scenery, and a host of top-quality beachside resorts, each of the Canary Islands offers something special for a winter holiday. Even on the ‘coldest’ of the Canary Islands, Tenerife, the lowest average temperature during winter is 17°C, with regular highs of 20°C - meaning there’s never a bad time to visit.

Found across the water from the Canary Islands on the northern coast of Africa, Morocco is a vibrant holiday destination which offers sunny climes throughout winter. Whether you want to experience the bustle of Marrakech’s souks, the mazy sidestreets of Fez, or the coastal retreat of Agadir, the country offers numerous hotspots for a winter getaway.

Fez is the least warm of these cities but still has regular highs of 17-21°C between December and March; Marrakech is a few degrees hotter with highs between 19-23°C, while Agadir is warmer still with peaks between 21-23°C in the same months. Evenings tend to be a little chillier, so remember to pack a jacket too – especially if you’re planning to venture into the desert!

Another island destination known for warmth in all seasons is Madeira. The winter season on this Portuguese haven feel more like Spring, with the temperature never falling below 7°C. Blessed with natural mountain scenery and beautiful beaches – you’ll be thankful the weather allows you to spend as much time outside as possible. The capital of Funchal has a lot going for it in terms of culture, while those who want to relax can find a plethora of quiet coastal spots.

Continuing the Spring theme - winter in Cyprus is just like the UK’s warmest Spring day, with temperatures between 17-19°C. Offering a unique mix of Turkish and Greek culture to match its warm climate, Cyprus offers plenty of beachside breaks to accommodate your winter needs. There are numerous great resorts to choose between, with Limassol, Pissouri, Larnaca, and Paphos being the pick of the bunch.

From Spring weather conditions to Summer – Dubai is such a hot place that its lowest temperature in the whole year is a massive 15°C! With a particularly sweltering summer season, it’s perhaps best to visit the UAE during the winter months, where you enjoy the warmth rather than it being uncomfortable. The coolest month here is January with an average high of 24°C, while March is where the temperatures really start to pick up again, climbing to 29°C.

Long-haul Holidays

They do say go big or go home, and considering this blog is about escaping the UK’s cold weather, we might as well go big. There are lots of long-haul destinations which benefit from summer weather all year round - places like Thailand, Cuba, Seychelles, and more. Blessed with tropical sunsets, white-sand beaches, and vibrant culture – winter is the perfect time to finally tick these far-away destinations off your to-do list.
