There’s nothing like snuggling under a blanket on the sofa with snacks beside you and the remote an extension of your hand – or is there? Seeing your favourite show in high definition is great, but it doesn’t get any better than visiting the real-life locations to truly immerse yourself in the action. From waving to the Pope in Rome to eating slices of pizza in the Big Apple, take a look at our list of TV shows airing in 2019 that will definitely inspire your next trip…

Russian Doll – New York City

Starring Orange is the New Black’s Natasha Lyonne; Russian Doll is a mind-bending mystery thriller that aired on Netflix in early 2019. The Christmas/New Year break saw regular binge-watchers complete the eight-episode series in a matter of hours, and as much as the repetition of the main character coming back to life and living the same day repeatedly was a little redundant, we couldn’t get enough of the rustic New York City settings. The extroverted and free-spirited nature of Nadia’s character is undoubtedly captured in the reflection of the city that never sleeps, from the yellow cabs whizzing by in the heart of Brooklyn to the neck-craning skyscrapers in the bustle of Manhattan. New York is edgy, hip and completely unique, and no matter how many times you visit the city, you’ll always stumble across a hidden gem or something you’ve never seen before.

Game of Thrones – Croatia and Iceland

A final season that the world just can’t wait to see but is also dreading to see end, Game of Thrones is a show that can’t be described – it has to be experienced. Ever since the programme first featured Icelandic scenes in the second season, the frozen landscapes have enticed super fans from every corner of the globe to visit the North Atlantic location, embarking on tours to envisage the wildings roaming through the scenes. From the lava fields of Dimmuborgir to the caves of Grjótagjá, Iceland undoubtedly puts you in the front seat of this HBO phenomenon.

On the hunt for sunnier climes but still a Game of Thrones extravaganza? Head to Croatia, where Dubrovnik was the main filming location for King’s Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms. But, wait – there’s more. Stroll through St Dominika Street in the Old Town to immerse yourself in the market scenes, gaze across the Adriatic Sea that doubles as Blackwater Bay, and visit Stradun, along which Cersei Lannister takes her walk of penance.

Homeland – Everywhere

Returning in 2019 for its eighth and final season, Claire Danes and her clan of CIA agents have hit the screens in a number of incredible locations over the years. Originally based on the Israeli television show Prisoners of War, the first two seasons of Homeland were rightfully filmed in Tel Aviv before filming switched to Morocco in the third. Cape Town played host to Homeland’s fourth season where the South African streets were converted into Pakistani themed alleyways for an authentic likeness. Berlin and New York provided the backdrops for the fifth and sixth seasons respectively while the seventh season started filming in Richmond, Virginia and concluded in Budapest, the Hungarian capital.

Rumours have been circulating if Homeland will be coming full circle with its eight season being filmed back in Tel Aviv, which we think is pretty likely. We admit, although the drama is gripping, it’s the beautiful Israeli streets we have our eye on. Although an unusual holiday destination, Israel is the perfect place to visit ancient town centres, local markets and cafés, tour historic landmarks or even swim in the Dead Sea.

Love Island – Majorca

Far be it for us to call Love Island inspirational, but we can’t deny that we feel a pang of jealousy watching people laze underneath the Majorcan sunshine. The game-show-stroke-reality programme airs every year from June to July and provides British viewers with eight weeks of challenges, make-ups and break-ups, and hearing those famous words, “I’ve got a text!” The huge white and pink themed villa is situated in a remote location near the town of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, and although the exact location of the property is kept under wraps, Majorca in its entirety is a true Spanish delight and is characterised by white beaches, luxurious resorts and vivacious nightlife. What more could you ask for?

The New Pope – Rome and Venice

Coming to screens in April 2019, the brand-new eight-part series The New Pope stars Jude Law and John Malkovich and is currently being filmed in the stunning city of Venice. While the details of the show are hush-hush, shooting began rightfully in Rome, and rumours suggest that the series will end in the Italian capital too. Undoubtedly, we can expect striking scenes of Vatican City and glimpses of iconic Italian landmarks such as the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and the Colosseum before scenes shift to the cerulean lakes and famous gondolas sailed by men in striped shirts and red neckties in Venice. Trust us; you’ll be booking your flight to Italy in the first ad break of the pilot episode.

Human Planet – Dubai

Who else feels like they would be content with their entire life being narrated by the dulcet tones of David Attenborough? Just us? Moving on swiftly… the British wildlife fanatic is back with another series of Human Planet airing in spring 2019 for mind-blowing cinematography among the superlative skyscrapers of Dubai. With footage of falcons kissing the larger than life buildings and the blinding oceans displayed in vivid technicolour, if a trip to Dubai wasn’t on your bucket list before – it definitely will be now.
