Travel Opinions

  • Anker Hotel, Oslo - "Comfy beds in a great hotel"

The Anker hotel is one of the best located hotel in Oslo, with just minutes walk to the centre and many attractions. The bed was comfortable and the room very clean. They had the breakfast service included which included full English, fruit, cereals, etc. The staff were friendly. We enjoyed our days in the hotel.

The city of Oslo stretches from the trendy harbour-front of Aker Brygge to the hilltops of Holmekolmen and the mountains further afield; and from the centre of the city it is easy to get around. Start your exploration of the city from the Royal Palace which rise about the city from the top of Slottsparken. Descending from the hill along the main street of Karl Johan Gate, you’ll pass by the National Gallery as well as three different theatres, before reaching the Norwegian Parliament, the Oslo Cathedral and the charming market square Stortorvet. All of these sights are found within less than a mile of each other and can easily be explored within a couple of hours as you journey through the capital. During your explorations you’ll undoubtedly gravitate towards the popular sites along Aker Brygge. Here you can visit the Nobel Peace Center and discover the history of various recipients throughout the years, see the Akerhus Castle and fortifications, attend a performance at the white architectural marble of the Oslo Opera House, or simply just relax and enjoy the sun setting over the calm Oslofjord from one of the cosy cafés or chic restaurants that are found along the harbour. In Oslo you’ll be at the very heart of Norway’s modern and vibrant soul without ever being too far away from glimpses of a fascinating past, set against landscape that has to be seen to be believed.

Sometimes referred to as the Venice of Scandinavia, Stockholm is a city where water is always present in the cityscape. Settled around some of the larger islands in an archipelago that consists of more than 30,000 islands, the many bridges and seaside streets make it a wonderful place to stroll around. Start your exploration of the city in the Old Town right in the middle of the city. Here you can visit the Royal Palace and the adjacent Museum of Medieval Stockholm. Grab a light lunch by trying the staple Scandinavian speciality of smorgasbord, which is delicious servings of rye bread generously decorated with various toppings and trimmings. Other highlights include the gigantic old ship at the Vasa Museum or the more modern ABBA Museum right next to it. Explore the Museum of Modern Art or catch a concert at the golf ball-shaped Globe Arena.

A city which brings to mind the image of quaint colourful houses by the city’s river, open sandwiches, and Carlsberg served in every bar and restaurant. It’s a rare European capital that can be accessed easily by foot should you feel in the mood for walking, though the public transport system is well-appointed and convenient when you want to rest. A happy medium is taking one of the many rental bicycles before zooming down the wide cycle lanes. In terms of sights, Tivoli Gardens and Amusement Park are a wonderful sight to see in all seasons. Perfect for a family day trip in the summer, it’s a great spot for a romantic stroll in the evenings. In winter, it turns into a veritable Christmas wonderland. A quirky site in the city is Christiania; a non-conformist haven that has been operated by squatters since 1971 - this hub represents a hotbed of creativity with art and graffiti on display throughout. Those who prefer to see their art more conventionally will find the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art a great spot on the outskirts of the city.
